The Pediatric Public Health Initiative, under the direction of Dr. Mona Hanna-Attisha, seeks a Participant Recruiter/Navigator for its public-health research study “IRISE: Impact of Resilience, Interventions, Stress, and Environmental Exposure in Flint.” The goal of the study is to enroll 400 mothers and children from Flint who was exposed to the lead water crisis. Study recruitment began in January 2018 and will continue through August 2019. For recruitment, IRISE staff contact mothers via mail and telephone. Once enrolled, participants complete a series of web-based surveys, telephone interviews, an in-person assessment, and return several follow-up surveys. 

 The Recruiter/Navigator will join the IRISE Team to recruit participants through mailings and telephone screenings. They will conduct enrollment interviews and maintain the study recruitment-call log. They will also schedule participant appointments, answer study questions, make appointment reminder calls, and track completion/return rates for the various study components. The Recruiter/Navigator will contact enrolled families quarterly and carry out other follow-up communications with families as needed.

The ideal candidate is willing to work a flexible schedule and has strong customer service skills. Additional experience collecting information through scripted interviews, entering responses into a database and/or having knowledge of Microsoft Outlook Calendars is highly sought after.


Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Conduct telephone interviews, following a script
  • Receive or collect interview information and enter it into a database
  • Prepare and send mailings
  • Answer phone calls and respond to emails
  • Maintain recruitment call log
  • Schedule participant appointments
  • Contact participants for appointment reminders and follow-up communications
  • Track and re-schedule participants through study components
  • Attend trainings and project meetings
  • Keep information confidential
  • Perform other duties as assigned


Required Qualifications:

  • High School Diploma or GED
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills
  • Good computer skills
  • Multi-tasking skills


Desired Qualifications:

  • Experience in making phone calls to individuals without prior introduction (cold calls)
  • Experience collecting information through scripted interviews and entering data into a database
  • Experience scheduling appointments
  • Knowledge of the Flint community and/or Flint water crisis
  • Available to work nights and weekends


This posting offers an on-call hourly position of about 10-18 hours per week located in Flint, MI. Hourly rate at $12-15/hr. The appointment is expected to last through August 2019.
